Piano FAQ's | Piano Information
Q: What are the main things to look for when purchasing a quality piano?
A: The following three important points are important considerations. First, you want to be absolutely sure that quality materials were used in the construction of the piano, such as solid spruce for the soundboard, hard rock maple in the pinblock, and an action made from all wood parts. Second, you should research who actually manufactured the piano. Find out if they have a high level of experience and expertise, and if the factory meets worldwide standards for quality and craftsmanship. Third, you want to be sure you are purchasing your piano from a service-oriented dealer. Ask how long have they been in business, are they experts in this area, and what kind of service after the sale do they offer. Most importantly...do they actively promote and participate in the hobby of playing the piano!
Q: How large of a piano should I purchase?
A: You should purchase the largest piano that will fit comfortably in your assigned space. A piano is a long-term investment, so it is important to purchase the piano you will be happy with for a long time. Be aware that both the size and shape of your room as well as the accoutrements in the room all influence how well it will fill your space with music. You’ll find that specialized piano retailers with years of expertise typically offer a service similar to interior designers where they will come to your home with a template to help you determine what size piano is best.
Q: Why do people add player piano systems to their piano? Will doing so harm the piano?
A: Adding a player system to the piano has become extremely popular, because it allows everyone to enjoy the piano at any time in virtually every situation and condition. The latest system allows you to set up your piano to play solo piano music, play along with some of your favorite recording artists and/or you, and even teach you how to play the piano! They can even record you playing the piano and connect to your home theater where you can sing karaoke. Some of the most deluxe systems can even integrate the playing piano into your video watching experience! When professionally installed, they cause no harm to the piano.
Q: How often do I need to tune my piano?
A: Your piano should be tuned twice a year by a technician/tuner. The best times to tune a piano are in the fall, after the heat has been on for about one month, and then again in summer, after the air conditioning has been on for about one month. Embracing a regular tuning schedule ensures that the technician/tuner will spot any problems early and ensures that your piano will always remain in top working condition.
Q: Can I place the piano on an outside wall in my house?
A: An inside wall is preferred. The key is to keep your piano away from areas exposed to large temperature and climatic changes, as this can damage the piano. It is also important to keep the piano out of direct sunlight, as extreme temperature will negatively affect the piano internally. Extended exposure to the sun will also cause the furniture finish to fade over time.
Q: What should I use to clean the finish on my piano?
A: A soft cloth (like a cotton t-shirt) is excellent material for cleaning your piano. Depending on the finish of your piano, you should be able to purchase an appropriate cleaner for both satin and polished finishes at the store where you purchased your piano. You should definitely not use abrasive cleaners or cleaners that include bleach or alcohol.
Q: Is it OK to move the piano myself?
A: Typically, no. A piano is very heavy and has many moving parts. Not having the correct equipment exposes you and the piano to great harm. A piano is a significant investment and should always be moved by a professional in order to ensure it remains in optimal working condition.
